Chapter 26

Showering Love

Nathaniel

They lay together on the hotel bed. It was still dark outside, the city lights below mirroring the stars. The suite’s candelabras had sprung alight with tiny vermillion flames, casting a soft glow around the lavish bedroom.

Kira was draped in nothing more than a thin sheet, which bunched at her waist, emphasising the curve of her hips and hinting at her perfect, naked form underneath.

Nathaniel had one arm wrapped around her, and she was nestled close, resting her head on his chest where she belonged.

She let out a contented sigh. “For fear of sounding romantic…I wish this night never had to end.”

Nathaniel smiled sadly as he traced her arm. The night would end sooner than either of them were prepared for, the hours before dawn slipping away too fast.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.

Kira glanced at him in surprise. “What for?”

“For failing you tonight.”

“You’ve already apologised—”

“It’s not enough. I shouldn’t have left the room. And I should never have allowed Mark to…” his fists curled. “For letting that happen…” He couldn’t get the words out, his grief instantly replaced with anger that charged his muscles. The punishment had cleansed them, but he couldn’t let go of the guilt that crept back in to tighten his chest.

“Shh,” Kira soothed, adjusting her position so she could prop her chin on his chest—such a wolf thing to do. “You’re being too hard on yourself. You did not fail me. This was my choice, and I agreed to it because it’s essential to our plan.”

“My plan,” he corrected, feeling annoyed with himself. “I should have put a stop to it the moment I met you.”

“I don’t understand. What’s changed?”

“Everything.”

Nathaniel loved Kira with all his heart. But the fact that he was grooming her bothered him greatly. This was not how a male vampire was supposed to treat his mate. Growing up, he’d had so few examples of honourable behaviour, but that was no excuse.

Barbara had told him enough of what vampires had once been like—what many were still like outside his father’s court—that he should have known better.

Nathaniel had even met some of them. Such good-natured vampires typically lived in the countryside far from the Capital and were nothing like his father’s courtiers. The royal court was rotten to the core, but once destroyed, there would be hope for the rest of them to live better, kinder lives.

“Nathaniel?” Kira prompted. “What’s wrong?”

He let out a long sigh, but it did not relieve the tension he felt. “Vampires have similar but different values to shifters. Wolves, as you know, rely on a strict pack hierarchy, where members obey orders without question like soldiers. Vampires, however, place more importance on family structures. We don’t have a choice in the matter because these are reinforced by blood ties. There is nothing more important to a vampire, especially a male one, than honouring one’s family. Tonight, I let you down by not protecting you.” He cupped her face, and she leant into his touch. “My love. I will do better by you.
